Overview
Description
The Boreland Phase 1 restoration project, near Killin in Stirling, aims to restore 114 hectares of degraded blanket bog, with completion scheduled for 2025. Located in the Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon National Scenic Area (NSA) and near the River Tay Special Area of Conservation (SAC), the site lies within a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA), ensuring water quality protections are integral to the project. The restoration will mitigate further erosion of peat, enhance biodiversity, and safeguard sensitive ecosystems. Key activities include reprofiling hags and gullies, installing over 1,500 peat dams and bunds, and reseeding bare peat areas to stabilise the bog and raise the water table. This work improves habitat conditions for species like golden eagles and water voles, while also ensuring compliance with Scottish Water and SAC guidelines. Over its 79-year duration, the project aligns with the UK Government’s voluntary carbon market principles and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13), clean water (SDG 6), and life on land (SDG 15). Boreland Phase 1 demonstrates the critical role of peatland restoration in tackling climate change and enhancing ecological resilience.
