Overview
Description
The Achnacarry Phase 2 peatland restoration project, near Spean Bridge, restored 186 hectares of degraded blanket bog amidst the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, an area renowned for its natural beauty and rugged mountains. This site lies adjacent to the West Inverness-shire Lochs SPA, a vital habitat for black-throated divers and common scoters, and supports species such as water voles and otters. Using techniques such as reprofiling, peat dams, bunding, and the transposition of sphagnum moss, the restoration raised the water table, halted peat degradation, and created favourable conditions for wetland vegetation to thrive. These interventions improved the site’s natural carbon storage capacity and enhanced its hydrology, providing long-term benefits for biodiversity and water quality. The project adheres to the UK Government’s principles for voluntary carbon market integrity, ensuring its measurable contributions to carbon sequestration align with national and global climate goals. It also supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). Achnacarry Phase 2 highlights the vital role of peatland restoration in protecting Scotland’s ecosystems, mitigating climate change, and preserving its iconic landscapes.
