Overview
Description
The Invercassley Phase 2 peatland restoration project, located in Glen Cassley, Sutherland, restored 216 hectares of degraded blanket bog between October 2024 and March 2025. Part of the River Oykel Special Area of Conservation (SAC), the project safeguards vital habitats for freshwater pearl mussels and Atlantic salmon while enhancing biodiversity and hydrological function. Restoration works included peat and mineral dams, gully and hag reprofiling, wave damming, and surface bunding to stabilise bare peat and encourage sphagnum moss growth. Measures were designed to prevent erosion, raise the water table, and avoid disturbance to sensitive watercourses and wildlife, with a Species Protection Plan in place. Scheduled to last 99 years, the project is expected to deliver 40,315 tCO2e in claimable emissions reductions under the Peatland Code. Supporting climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), Invercassley Phase 2 demonstrates peatland restoration’s crucial role in protecting ecosystems and tackling climate change.
