Gruinard Phase 2
Highland
Added on 18/12/2024
Overview
Description
Gruinard Phase 2 restored 247 hectares of degraded blanket bog on the Gruinard Estate, set in the dramatic landscapes of Wester Ross. Situated within the Wester Ross National Scenic Area and a Wild Land Area, the site was marked by extensive erosion features, including gullies, bare peat, and artificial drains. These habitats are home to wildlife such as otters, water voles, and golden eagles, making the restoration vital for biodiversity. The project used targeted techniques such as peat and timber dams, hag reprofiling, and sphagnum moss transplants to stabilise soils, raise the water table, and improve conditions for natural peat formation. These efforts have significantly enhanced the bog’s ability to store carbon, improve water quality, and support diverse ecosystems. Aligned with UK voluntary carbon market principles, the project delivers measurable climate benefits and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15). Gruinard Phase 2 demonstrates the importance of peatland restoration in addressing climate challenges and preserving Scotland’s unique landscapes.
