Overview
Description
The Kingsbeck Estate Peatland Restoration Project, located near Biggar in South Lanarkshire, is restoring 132 hectares of degraded blanket bog. This remote landscape, at altitudes up to 750m, is marked by eroded hags, gullies, and artificial drains, which have led to peat loss and drying bog conditions. Restoration efforts will address these issues, promoting biodiversity and carbon storage. Key restoration activities include hag and gully reprofiling, peat and mineral dam construction, drain blocking, and sphagnum moss transplanting. These interventions aim to raise the water table, stabilise bare peat, and create conditions for natural regeneration. The project also incorporates sustainable deer management and herbivore impact assessments to ensure long-term restoration success. As part of a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA), the project will improve water quality and reduce flood risks. By adhering to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water (SDG 6)—this initiative underscores the role of peatland restoration in combating climate change and conserving Scotland’s ecosystems.
