Braigh Raithneach Phase 1 & 2
Perth and Kinross

Overview
Description
Scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, the Braigh Raithneach Peatland Restoration Project will restore a combined total of 409 hectares of degraded blanket bog across two phases at altitudes ranging from 570 to 650 metres. Both areas are severely affected by hag and gully erosion, bare peat, and artificial drainage, which have reduced the site’s capacity to store carbon and support biodiversity. Phase 1 (Autumn 2025–March 2026) will focus on 222 hectares of peatland, targeting extensive hag and gully erosion and drainage impacts. Phase 2 (Autumn 2026–March 2027) will restore a further 187 hectares at higher altitude, addressing widespread flat bare peat and erosion features. Across both phases, restoration techniques will include hag and gully reprofiling, peat and mineral dam installation, cell bunding, micro-erosion repair, and drain blocking. These measures aim to raise the water table, stabilise exposed peat, reduce erosion, and promote the regrowth of sphagnum moss—a vital component of healthy peat formation and long-term carbon sequestration. The project lies within several designated conservation areas, including the Black Woods of Rannoch SSSI, River Tay SAC, and Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon NSA, requiring strict water quality protection and ecological safeguards. Pre-restoration surveys for protected species such as otters, water voles, and waders will be undertaken to ensure appropriate mitigation measures are implemented. By contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land), Phases 1 and 2 together represent a significant step in Scotland’s efforts to combat climate change, enhance biodiversity, and restore critical upland peatland ecosystems.
