Overview
Description
Completed in 2024, the Urlar Phase 1 project restored 349 hectares of degraded blanket bog near Aberfeldy in Perthshire. Located between altitudes of 450–550 metres, the site features extensive erosion, including hags, gullies, and artificial drains, within a sensitive landscape. While there are no statutory conservation areas directly within the project boundary, the western edge is near Loch Tay SAC, and parts of the site fall within a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA). Restoration efforts adhered to Scottish Water guidelines to protect water quality for the River Tay catchment. The project used techniques such as wave damming, gully and hag reprofiling, peat dam installation, and sphagnum moss transplants to stabilise erosion, raise the water table, and promote carbon sequestration. These measures enhance biodiversity by creating habitats for species such as otters, water voles, and ground-nesting birds, while also protecting existing carbon stores. Over its 58-year duration, the project adheres to UK voluntary carbon market principles and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). Urlar Phase 1 exemplifies the benefits of peatland restoration for climate, biodiversity, and water security.
