Description
Planned for completion in 2026–2027, Phase 2 will restore 33 hectares of peatland in the northern part of the estate, targeting artificially drained peatland and isolated erosion features. This smaller but ecologically significant phase plays a crucial role in enhancing the resilience of Scotland’s peatlands. Phase 2 will employ drain blocking, peat dams, gully reprofiling, and cell bunding to re-wet degraded areas and prevent further carbon loss. By restoring hydrological function and encouraging sphagnum moss growth, the project will improve biodiversity while stabilising the peatland’s long-term ability to store carbon and regulate water flow. As part of a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA), this phase will incorporate strict pollution prevention measures and pre-restoration ecological surveys to minimise impacts on protected species such as golden eagles, otters, and water voles. Aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 15: Life on Land), Phase 2 underscores Scotland’s leadership in peatland restoration, contributing to climate mitigation efforts and the preservation of vital upland habitats. Depending on scheduling, the project will either commence in autumn 2025 following Phase 1’s completion or begin as a standalone initiative in autumn 2026, concluding by March 2027.
