Overview
Description
The final phase of the Braigh Raithneach Peatland Restoration Project, Phase 5, will take place in autumn 2027, targeting 177 hectares of eroded blanket bog at 600m altitude. With peat depths reaching up to 270cm, this area plays a key role in carbon sequestration and climate resilience. Key interventions include gully blocking, peat and mineral dams, and hag reprofiling, designed to re-wet the peatland, reduce erosion, and restore vegetation cover. Micro-erosion repair and cell bunding will also be applied to stabilise the landscape and encourage sphagnum moss colonisation. Located within the Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon NSA, the project will follow best practice guidelines for water quality protection, particularly given its hydrological connection to the River Tay SAC. Pre-restoration species surveys will be conducted to mitigate potential impacts on otters, waders, and other protected wildlife. By supporting SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), Phase 5 will complete the full-scale restoration of Braigh Raithneach’s peatlands, reinforcing Scotland’s role in global peatland conservation efforts. The project will be completed by March 2028.
