Overview
Description
Beginning in autumn 2025, Phases 3 and 4 of the Braigh Raithneach Peatland Restoration Project will restore a combined 396 hectares of degraded blanket bog at altitudes between 550 and 650 metres. Both areas are heavily affected by hag and gully erosion, threatening peat stability, biodiversity, and carbon storage capacity. Phase 3 (Autumn 2025–March 2026) will restore 227 hectares of peatland suffering from extensive erosion and drainage impacts. Phase 4 (Autumn 2026–March 2027) will target a further 169 hectares with deep peat deposits of up to 248 cm, making it a particularly important site for carbon sequestration. Restoration works across both phases will include drain blocking, peat and mineral dam installation, gully reprofiling, cell bunding, and micro-erosion repair. These interventions aim to raise the water table, slow water runoff, stabilise eroding peat surfaces, and promote sphagnum moss regeneration—key processes in re-establishing the bog’s hydrological and ecological integrity. Located within the Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon NSA, Black Woods of Rannoch SAC/SSSI, and the Breadalbane – Schiehallion Wild Land Area, the project will be carried out under strict ecological and hydrological safeguards to protect downstream habitats, including the River Tay SAC. Pre-restoration ecological surveys will identify the presence of protected species such as otters, water voles, and waders, ensuring that all necessary mitigation measures are in place. By restoring peatland function, enhancing biodiversity, and improving long-term carbon storage, Phases 3 and 4 will make a significant contribution to UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Life on Land)—advancing Scotland’s broader efforts to combat climate change and protect vital upland ecosystems.
