Overview
Description
Completed in early 2025, the Lick Estate Peatland Restoration Project restored 66 hectares of degraded blanket bog to the south of Loch Tummel in Perth & Kinross. Situated within the Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon National Scenic Area (NSA) and the catchment of a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), the site plays a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and carbon storage. The peatland had suffered from significant erosion due to artificial drainage, hags, gullies, and bare peat areas, leading to habitat degradation and carbon loss. Restoration work included hag and gully reprofiling, peat and timber dam construction, surface bunding, and sphagnum moss transplants to stabilise exposed peat and restore natural hydrology. These interventions successfully re-wetted the bog, reduced erosion, and improved habitats for wildlife, including black grouse and golden eagles. Special mitigation measures ensured no disturbance to black grouse lek sites and golden eagle nesting areas during the work. By contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6)—the project demonstrates the vital role of peatland restoration in tackling climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and protecting Scotland’s natural heritage.
