Overview
Description
Scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, Phase 1 of the Garrows Estate Peatland Restoration Project will restore 169 hectares of degraded blanket bog. This phase focuses on hag and gully erosion across high-altitude peatlands (500m–800m), where bare peat and artificial drainage are contributing to carbon loss and habitat degradation. Key restoration techniques include hag and gully reprofiling, peat and timber dam installation, surface bunding, and drain blocking, all aimed at raising the water table, stabilising the landscape, and encouraging sphagnum moss regeneration—essential for long-term peat formation. In areas with extensive erosion, micro-erosion repair, cell bunding, and geotextile application will be used to promote vegetation recovery. Although the project is not within a designated conservation area, it lies within a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA), requiring strict water quality protection measures. Restoration work will avoid watercourse buffers and follow SEPA’s General Binding Rules (GBR) to minimise disturbance. Pre-restoration ecological surveys will be conducted for protected species such as otters and ground-nesting birds, ensuring compliance with best practice conservation guidelines. By contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 15: Life on Land), Phase 1 will play a crucial role in climate mitigation and peatland conservation in Scotland. The project will be completed by March 2026, laying the groundwork for Phase 2.
