Description
Scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, Phase 1 of the Drummond & Glenartney Peatland Restoration Project will restore 168 hectares of degraded peatland in the southern region of the estate. This vital initiative addresses extensive hag and gully erosion and areas of artificial drainage, stabilising the landscape to enhance carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Key restoration techniques include hag and gully reprofiling, peat dams, surface bunding, and artificial drain restoration, all designed to raise the water table and encourage sphagnum moss regeneration—a crucial step in new peat formation. These interventions will halt erosion, improve hydrological balance, and create thriving habitats for species such as golden eagles. Situated within a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA), the project will follow stringent water quality protection measures to safeguard local ecosystems. Ground-nesting bird surveys and mitigation strategies will ensure the project aligns with conservation best practices. Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 15: Life on Land), this phase strengthens Scotland’s commitment to climate resilience and peatland conservation. With completion expected by March 2026, Phase 1 will set the foundation for long-term ecosystem recovery.
