Overview
Description
The Carroglen Peatland Restoration Project, located near Crieff, Perthshire, successfully restored 59.81 hectares of degraded blanket bog, marking a significant milestone in 2022. Part of the Carroglen Estate, a traditional hill farm known for its environmental stewardship, the project aligns with the estate’s efforts to restore natural habitats and promote biodiversity. Carroglen has re-established 35,000 native trees and provides habitats for wildlife such as red deer, mountain hares, eagles, and black grouse. The restoration addressed severe degradation, including eroded hags, bare peat, and artificial drains. Techniques such as hag reprofiling, peat and timber dams, and drain blocking were used to stabilise slopes, raise the water table, and encourage vegetation recovery. These interventions improved carbon sequestration, enhanced biodiversity, and reduced sedimentation in surrounding watercourses. As part of community engagement and education, the project was presented as a case study at the White Church in the village, showcasing the importance of peatland restoration and its environmental benefits. With an estimated net greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 13,960 tCO2e over its 100-year lifespan, the project contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). This initiative highlights the vital role of peatland restoration in combating climate change and conserving Scotland’s natural heritage.
