Description
The Strathvaich Estate Phase 7 project continues a legacy of successful peatland restoration initiatives on the estate, marking the seventh phase of work. This project will restore 137 hectares of degraded blanket bog within the rugged and remote landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. The restoration site is near the Beinn Dearg SSSI and within the Rhiddoroch - Beinn Dearg - Ben Wyvis Wild Land Area (WLA), emphasising its ecological and environmental importance. Scheduled to begin in September 2025 and complete by March 2026, this phase will implement gully reprofiling, drain blocking, and peat dam construction to rewet the bog, stabilise exposed peat, and promote sphagnum moss regeneration. These interventions will improve habitats for species such as golden eagles while reducing erosion and sedimentation in nearby watercourses. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).
