Overview
Description
Scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, Phase 1 of the Inverasdale Peatland Restoration Project will restore 141.2 hectares of degraded blanket bog within the Inverasdale Peatlands Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This phase targets extensive hag and gully erosion, areas of bare peat, and artificial drainage features that are accelerating carbon loss and habitat degradation. Key restoration techniques include hag and gully reprofiling, peat dams, surface bunding, and drain blocking, all designed to re-wet the peatland, stabilise the bog surface, and encourage sphagnum moss regeneration—a crucial component of long-term peat formation. These interventions will reduce erosion, restore hydrological balance, and support key species, including white-tailed eagles and otters. The project is hydrologically linked to the Inner Hebrides & the Minches SAC, designated for harbour porpoises, and sits within the Wester Ross National Scenic Area (NSA). Strict protected species mitigation measures will be followed, including seasonal work restrictions to avoid disturbing white-tailed eagles during breeding season (March–August). By contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 15: Life on Land), Phase 1 reinforces Scotland’s commitment to peatland conservation, climate resilience, and biodiversity protection. Restoration is expected to be completed by March 2026, laying the groundwork for Phase 2.
