Overview
Description
Completed in December 2023, the Strathcanaird West Peatland Restoration Project restored 211 hectares of degraded blanket bog in the remote Highlands of Wester Ross, near Ullapool. Situated at an altitude of 230m, the site features peat depths averaging 123 cm and reaching up to 5 meters. Restoration addressed significant erosion caused by hags, gullies, and artificial drains, helping to stabilise the bog and prevent further carbon loss. The project utilised hag and gully reprofiling, drain blocking, peat dam construction, and sphagnum moss transplants to rewet the bog, promote peat formation, and enhance biodiversity. These efforts improved habitats for key species, including golden eagles and water voles, while also bolstering the area’s hydrological balance. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water (SDG 6)—this project demonstrates the vital role of peatland restoration in mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and protecting Scotland’s unique natural heritage.
