Overview
Description
The Strathcanaird East Peatland Restoration Project, near Ullapool in Wester Ross, put 263.73 hectares of degraded blanket bog on the road to recovery. Located within the Wester Ross National Scenic Area (NSA) and close to the ‘Inverpolly, Loch Urigill, and other nearby Lochs’ Special Area of Conservation (SAC), this remote and ecologically significant site spans the rugged highland landscape. Completed in February 2025, restoration techniques include hag and gully reprofiling, drain blocking, and peat and timber dam construction. Efforts will also focus on revegetating bare peat and transplanting sphagnum moss to promote peat formation and hydrological balance. This work will create healthier habitats for species like golden eagles, otters, water voles and upland birds, while enhancing the area’s resilience to climate change. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water (SDG 6)—the project underscores the vital role of peatland restoration in conserving biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and protecting Scotland’s iconic landscapes.
