Overview
Description
The Sandside North peatland restoration project, located along the dramatic north coast west of Thurso, successfully restored 130 hectares of degraded blanket bog. With peat depths averaging 1.72 metres and reaching 4 metres, the site, previously characterised by eroded hags, gullies, and historic peat cutting, has been rejuvenated into a thriving ecosystem. Partially within the Red Point Coast SSSI and North Caithness Cliffs SPA, this coastal site supports peregrines, golden eagles, and hen harriers. Restoration included blocking drains, stabilising bare peat, and promoting sphagnum moss growth to restore the bog’s natural carbon sequestration capacity. This project aligns with government-endorsed voluntary carbon market principles and contributes to SDGs by enhancing biodiversity (SDG 15), mitigating climate change (SDG 13), and protecting coastal habitats (SDG 14).
