Overview
Description
The Sandside Mid peatland restoration project, also near Reay, Thurso, encompasses 347 hectares of blanket bog with peat depths at an average of 2 metres, reaching over 5 metres in some areas. This remote and rugged site is situated within the East Halladale SSSI, Caithness and Sutherland Peatlands SAC, SPA, RAMSAR, and the East Halladale Flows Wild Land Area, providing vital habitats for species such as golden eagles, hen harriers, and other wildlife. The project involves re-wetting the bog by raising the water table, stabilising erosion features, and regenerating sphagnum moss, creating the conditions necessary for new peat formation. These efforts will significantly increase carbon sequestration while safeguarding biodiversity and enhancing habitat resilience. By adhering to voluntary carbon market principles, Sandside Mid contributes to SDGs such as climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), demonstrating the synergy between peatland restoration and sustainable development.
