Overview
Description
The Latheronwheel Phase 1 Peatland Restoration Project, located in Caithness, will restore 341 hectares of degraded blanket bog, addressing drainage and erosion to stabilise peatlands and enhance biodiversity. The site lies within key conservation areas, including the Coire na Beinne Mires SSSI, Blar nam Faoileag SSSI, Caithness and Sutherland Peatlands SAC, SPA, and Ramsar site, and the Causeymire-Knockfin Flows Wild Land Area. Restoration activities will include gully reprofiling, peat dams, and revegetation to raise the water table, store carbon, and support wetland habitats. Aligned with the Peatland Code, the project is expected to deliver long-term greenhouse gas emissions reductions while contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15). The project demonstrates peatland restoration’s role in combating climate change and preserving Scotland’s ecosystems.
