Overview
Description
The Invercassley Phase 3 peatland restoration project, located on Balnagown Estates in Sutherland, will restore 193 hectares of degraded blanket bog between late 2024 and early 2025. Hydrologically linked to the River Oykel SAC, the project supports vital habitats for species such as freshwater pearl mussels and Atlantic salmon. Restoration works include reprofiling hags and gullies, damming drains, and bunding to stabilise exposed peat and encourage sphagnum moss growth. These efforts will raise the water table, reduce carbon loss, and enhance biodiversity, with strict measures in place to protect sensitive habitats and wildlife. Spanning 75 years, the project aligns with the Peatland Code and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), highlighting the critical role of peatland restoration in tackling climate change.
