Overview
Description
Set for completion in 2026, Phase 3 will focus on restoring degraded peatland in the remote landscapes of Caithness, within The Flow Country, recently designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As part of the world’s most extensive blanket bog system, this area is a globally significant carbon store and a vital refuge for biodiversity. The project addresses erosion and degradation that threaten the peatland’s ecological integrity and capacity to sequester carbon. Through innovative restoration techniques, it will stabilise the landscape, improve hydrological balance, and promote the growth of sphagnum moss, which is essential for new peat formation. These efforts will enhance biodiversity, supporting species uniquely adapted to Scotland’s peatlands. By aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), this phase highlights the global importance of The Flow Country’s peatlands in tackling climate change and protecting Scotland’s natural heritage.
