Description
The Innerwick Estate Peatland Restoration Project, located in Glen Lyon within the Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon National Scenic Area (NSA) and adjacent to the River Tay SAC, is a vital initiative restoring 659 hectares of degraded blanket bog over four phases. Set amidst the remote landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, this project is essential for preserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change. Restoration works, commencing with Phase 1 in September 2025 and concluding with Phase 4 by March 2029, will involve wave damming, hag and gully reprofiling, cell bunding, and micro-erosion repair. These interventions will rewet the peat, halt erosion, and promote sphagnum moss regrowth, which is critical for new peat formation and carbon sequestration. By improving hydrology, enhancing habitats for species like otters, lampreys, and Atlantic salmon, and safeguarding drinking water quality in a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA), these projects contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—notably climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water (SDG 6).
