Description
Also known as Am Fireach, the Gruinard Phase 1 peatland restoration project has rejuvenated 168.22 hectares of degraded blanket bog in the remote and rugged Gruinard Estate, above Strath na Sealga. Situated at elevations of 420–470 metres, the site had suffered extensive damage from bare peat and disrupted hydrology, which have now been successfully addressed through innovative restoration techniques. Partially located within the Wester Ross National Scenic Area (NSA), the project employed reprofiling, raising the water table, and promoting sphagnum moss growth to restore the bog’s ecological balance. These measures enhanced the site’s capacity to store carbon, improved water quality, and enriched habitats for species like otters and breeding birds. By adhering to voluntary carbon market principles, Gruinard Phase 1 contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, including protecting life on land (SDG 15), taking climate action (SDG 13), and ensuring sustainable land use (SDG 12).
