Overview
Description
Glendoe, situated in the Scottish Highlands near Loch Knockie, is set to restore up to 345 hectares of degraded blanket bog across challenging yet ecologically significant terrain. The site includes parts of the Glendoe Lochans SSSI and Loch Knockie and Nearby Lochs SPA, designated for their importance to breeding birds such as Slavonian grebes and common scoters. These designations underscore the project’s critical role in preserving biodiversity while contributing to Scotland’s conservation priorities. Restoration efforts will include hag and gully reprofiling, drain blocking, and habitat enhancement to halt erosion, improve hydrology, and support carbon sequestration. These measures will strengthen peatland resilience, benefiting downstream water quality within a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA). The project also incorporates a proactive deer management strategy to minimise herbivore impact and ensure the success of restoration activities. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), the Glendoe project highlights the transformative role of peatland restoration in combating climate change, supporting biodiversity, and safeguarding vital ecosystems. The phased restoration approach ensures both ecological sustainability and measurable contributions to carbon reduction. Completion of the first phase is targeted for 2025, with further work planned based on feasibility studies and ongoing assessments.
