Description
The Dundreggan Phase 2 peatland restoration project, near Inverness, is set to begin in winter 2025, aiming to restore 249 hectares of severely degraded blanket bog within the renowned Dundreggan Estate, a leader in Scotland’s rewilding movement under Trees for Life. This 100-year project targets steep gullies and large bare peat areas, using advanced techniques such as hag reprofiling, peat dams, and sphagnum moss transplants to halt erosion and promote peat formation. Supporting key species like otters, freshwater pearl mussels, and golden eagles, the project aligns with the UK Government’s voluntary carbon market principles and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15). With its long-term vision, Phase 2 strengthens Dundreggan’s role as a beacon of ecosystem restoration in Scotland.
