Description
The Dundreggan Phase 1 peatland restoration project, near Inverness, is transforming 214.94 hectares of degraded blanket bog within the renowned Dundreggan Estate, a leader in Scotland’s rewilding movement under Trees for Life. This flagship project addresses severe erosion, including hags and gullies, using techniques such as hag reprofiling, peat dams, and sphagnum moss transplants. These efforts are raising the water table, stabilizing the landscape, and encouraging peat-forming vegetation. The restoration supports key wildlife, including golden eagles, black grouse, and otters, while enhancing carbon storage and aligning with the UK Government’s voluntary carbon market principles. Dundreggan Phase 1 contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), showcasing how rewilding and peatland restoration can address climate challenges and biodiversity loss.
