Overview
Description
The Corrimony Farm Phase 1 Peatland Restoration Project is restoring 315 hectares of degraded blanket bog in a landscape of exceptional ecological value. Situated in the Scottish Highlands, the site lies within or near several nationally and internationally important conservation areas, including the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve (NNR), the Glen Affric–Strathconon Special Protection Area (SPA), and a Drinking Water Protected Area (DWPA) supplying the Invermoriston Water Treatment Works. These designations highlight the importance of the site for biodiversity, water quality, and carbon storage. The project will be delivered in two phases: • Phase 1 (141 hectares): Scheduled from September 2025 to February 2026 • Phase 2 (174 hectares): Scheduled from September 2026 to February 2027 Restoration work includes hag and gully reprofiling, drain blocking, and peat and timber dam construction to rewet the bog, stabilise erosion, and promote sphagnum moss regeneration. These interventions will improve water retention, enhance carbon sequestration, and create healthier habitats for key species such as golden eagles, black grouse, otters, and water voles. By improving the peatland’s hydrological function, the project will also contribute to cleaner water downstream, benefiting both ecosystems and public water supply. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6)—this project demonstrates the crucial role of peatland restoration in protecting fragile ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. By restoring such an ecologically significant site, the project enhances some of Scotland’s most important natural landscapes for generations to come.
