Description
Working alongside Crosscut Forestry, The Clach Liath Phase 3 peatland restoration project, located in the Highlands north-west of Dingwall, successfully restored 280 hectares of degraded blanket bog, concluding in 2024. The project site lies within Ben Wyvis SSSI, SAC, and SPA, and close to Allt nan Caorach SSSI, safeguarding the ecological integrity of these designated areas. As part of the drinking water catchment for Newmore Water Treatment Works, the project also plays a key role in improving water quality and flow regulation. Restoration activities addressed severe erosion, including gully and hag reprofiling, dam and bund construction, and the revegetation of bare peat to prevent further degradation. These measures raised the water table, stabilised carbon stores, and fostered the growth of sphagnum moss, vital for new peat formation. The rewetting of the site also contributes to reducing flood risk and mitigating drought impacts, supporting downstream ecosystems and human water needs. Over its 100-year duration, Clach Liath Phase 3 is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 39,225 tCO2e, all of which is claimable as Pending Issuance Units (PIUs). By adhering to the Peatland Code, the project aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15). This phase showcases the diverse benefits of peatland restoration, from enhancing biodiversity to improving water security and climate resilience.
