Description
Working alongside Crosscut Forestry, The Clach Liath Phase 2 peatland restoration project, located on the Clach Liath Estate in the Highlands near Dingwall, successfully restored 122.58 hectares of degraded blanket bog, completing in 2024. The site lies within Ben Wyvis SSSI, SAC, and SPA, and near Allt nan Caorach SSSI, contributing to the protection and enhancement of these vital habitats. The restoration addressed severe erosion, drainage and drying, ensuring the long-term health of the ecosystem. Key restoration activities included 30,011 metres of gully and hag reprofiling, 5,399 metres of drain zipping, 4,050 peat bunds and dams, and 45 square metres of cell bunding. Geojute was used to stabilise bare peat in heavily eroded areas, enabling vegetation recovery. These interventions raised the water table, reduced carbon loss, and encouraged sphagnum moss growth, essential for peat formation. Improvements in water quality and sediment control also supported the integrity of a nearby drinking water catchment. Over its 90-year duration, the project is expected to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 37,123 tCO2e, with 31,555 tCO2e claimable as Pending Issuance Units (PIUs). By adhering to the Peatland Code and supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), Clach Liath Phase 2 reinforces the role of restored ecosystems in creating a sustainable future for Scotland’s landscapes and communities.
