Description
Working alongside Crosscut Forestry, The Clach Liath Phase 1 peatland restoration project, located near Dingwall in the Highlands, successfully restored 103.96 hectares of degraded blanket bog, completing in 2023. Situated at altitudes between 400 and 570 metres, the project lies close to key conservation areas, including Ben Wyvis SSSI, SAC, and SPA, and Allt nan Caorach SSSI. The restoration stabilised peatland ecosystems, reduced erosion, and re-vegetated bare peat, enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. Works included drain zipping and wave damming (6,818 metres), gully blocking and reprofiling (16,014 metres), and revegetating hag edges and bare peat through cell bunding and turfing. These efforts raised the water table, halted carbon loss, and fostered sphagnum moss growth for new peat formation. The project will also improve water quality, reduced sedimentation, and support habitats for wildlife such as golden plovers. Expected to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 30,645 tCO2e over its 95-year lifespan, with 26,048 tCO2e claimable as Pending Issuance Units (PIUs), Clach Liath Phase 1 contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15). This initiative underscores the importance of peatland restoration in combating climate change and conserving Scotland’s natural heritage.
