Overview
Description
Due to finish in 2027, Phase 4 will restore peatland across one of Scotland’s most remote and dramatic landscapes, within The Flow Country, recently recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the world’s largest expanse of blanket bog, The Flow Country is a globally significant ecosystem, essential for carbon storage, climate regulation, and biodiversity conservation. This phase will halt erosion, protect critical carbon stores, and create thriving habitats for species such as golden eagles and other peatland specialists. By stabilising the landscape and promoting sphagnum moss growth, the project will enhance the peatland’s ability to sequester carbon and support a diverse ecosystem in this wild and isolated region. Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), this phase reinforces the global importance of Scotland’s peatland restoration efforts. As part of The Flow Country’s conservation strategy, it highlights the critical role of peatland ecosystems in combating biodiversity loss and climate change, ensuring their resilience for future generations.
