Overview
Description
Scheduled for completion in 2026, Braemore & Langwell Phase 2 will restore remote and ecologically significant peatlands near Berriedale, Caithness, within The Flow Country, recently recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This vast and unique landscape is the world’s most extensive blanket bog system, playing a vital role in global carbon storage and biodiversity conservation. These landscapes, characterised by their rugged beauty and isolation, are critical for climate regulation and wildlife, supporting species such as golden eagles and other peatland specialists. Restoration efforts will repair eroded features, stabilise the bog, and promote sphagnum moss growth, a key driver of peat formation and long-term carbon sequestration. By contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), this project strengthens the resilience of a globally significant ecosystem. As part of The Flow Country’s conservation strategy, it highlights Scotland’s leadership in peatland restoration, demonstrating the essential role of these habitats in combating climate change and preserving natural heritage.
