Overview
Description
The Achnacarry Estate Phase 4 Peatland Restoration Project, located near Spean Bridge in the West Highlands, is set to begin in April 2026. The project will restore 109.58 hectares of degraded blanket bog over a 100-year period, focusing on eroded peatland features such as hags, gullies, and bare peat areas. Although the site lies outside statutory conservation designations, the restoration will take place on an upland estate that balances biodiversity conservation with traditional land use, including deer stalking and limited grazing. Planned techniques include hag and gully reprofiling, bund construction, and re-vegetation using locally sourced turves to raise the water table, prevent further peat loss, and improve water quality. Once complete, the project is expected to generate 27,225 tCO₂e in claimable emissions reductions, in full alignment with the Peatland Code. It also supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action (SDG 13) and life on land (SDG 15), advancing nature-based solutions to climate change in a working Highland landscape.
