Overview
Description
The Achnacarry Phase 3 restoration project, located on the Achnacarry Estate near Spean Bridge in the Scottish Highlands, has restored 105 hectares of degraded blanket bog within the breathtaking landscapes of Lochaber. While not within designated conservation areas, the site is close to the West Inverness-shire Lochs SPA, home to black-throated divers and common scoters, and supports wildlife such as golden eagles, water voles, and otters. Restoration activities included hag and gully reprofiling, peat dams, and sphagnum moss transplants to stabilise bare peat and raise the water table. These measures have halted erosion, improved hydrology, and enhanced the bog’s natural carbon sequestration capacity. By adhering to the UK Government’s voluntary carbon market principles, the project ensures robust contributions to carbon savings and biodiversity conservation. It also aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water (SDG 6). Achnacarry Phase 3 exemplifies the role of peatland restoration in mitigating climate change and preserving Scotland’s natural heritage.
