Overview
Description
Completed in January 2024, the Strone Estate Phase 1 project restored 134 hectares of degraded blanket bog near Cairndow in Argyll and Bute. Located within the Glen Etive and Glen Fyne Special Protection Area (SPA), the site provides critical habitats for golden eagles and other upland species. Restoration activities included reprofiling hags and gullies, creating peat and mineral dams, and using bunding techniques to stabilise erosion, raise the water table, and promote the growth of sphagnum moss and other wetland vegetation. This 51-year project aligns with the UK Government’s voluntary carbon market principles and supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water (SDG 6). Strone Estate Phase 1 exemplifies the transformative potential of peatland restoration in combating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and preserving Scotland’s natural heritage.
