Overview
Description
The Islay Estates Peatland Restoration Project aims to restore 318 hectares of degraded blanket bog across two phases, starting in spring 2024 and concluding by early 2025. The project sits within several key conservation areas, including: • RAMSAR Sites: Gruinart Flats and Rinns of Islay. • SACs: Feur Lochan and Rinns of Islay. • SPAs: Gruinart Flats, Laggan Peninsula and Bay, and Rinns of Islay. • SSSIs: Gruinart Flats, Laggan Peninsula and Bay, Loch Tallant, and Rinns of Islay. Restoration activities include 57,733 metres of peat bank reprofiling, 22,048 metres of drain damming, and 122 metres of gully blocking. These measures will stabilise eroded peat, raise the water table, and promote sphagnum moss growth, benefiting species like Greenland white-fronted geese, hen harriers, and wading birds. Aligned with the Peatland Code and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13 and SDG 15), this 80-year project demonstrates the vital role of peatland restoration in enhancing biodiversity, water quality, and carbon storage within Scotland’s protected landscapes.
