Description
Completed in 2021, the Rottal Phase 1 project restored 29.68 hectares of degraded blanket bog on Rottal Estate, Angus. The site, located between the River South Esk SAC and the Cairngorms Massif SPA, featured extensive erosion, bare peat, and artificial drains. Restoration activities included blocking drains with peat and timber dams, reprofiling eroded gullies, and spreading sphagnum moss and heather mulch to stabilise the peat and encourage vegetation growth. The project reduced sediment loss to nearby watercourses, benefitting species like salmon and enhancing water quality in the River South Esk. By removing deep drainage channels, the work also decreased mortality rates for ground-nesting birds by reducing chick trapping hazards. Designed to last 100 years, the project complies with the Peatland Code and aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). Rottal Phase 1 demonstrates the lasting ecological and climate benefits of peatland restoration in Scotland.
