Description
The Kildrummy & Glenkindie Peatland Restoration Project, covering 214.75 hectares in the Cairngorms National Park, is in the early planning stages. This remote landscape in Aberdeenshire features eroded gullies, hags, and artificial drains, with peat depths averaging 93 cm. Scheduled to begin in early 2026, the project will employ hag and gully reprofiling, drain blocking, and peat dam construction to rewet degraded bogs, reduce erosion, and restore vegetation. By enhancing habitats for water voles and upland birds and reducing 49,778 tCO2e over its 90-year duration, the project contributes to climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water (SDG 6), showcasing the vital role of peatland restoration in mitigating climate change and conserving Scotland’s ecosystems.
